“In the rhythm of absence and presence, relationships acquire a new intensity, sustained by anticipation and the joy of reunion.”

After spending the first eighteen years of his career in Milan, where he proudly founded his own company, Massimo returns to his hometown at Gabriella’s wish, convinced that the most demanding part of his journey is finally behind him.

He soon settles into a relentless rhythm of travelling back and forth between Catania and Milan, comforted by the belief that all that remains is to guide a path already set in motion.

What he cannot foresee is that forces far beyond his control — from the collapse of Lehman Brothers, which would send shockwaves through the Italian economy, to the downfall of Italtel, once Italy’s leading telecommunications company, and the slow decline of the industry in which he had invested his passion and his hopes — will completely reshape his life, drawing him into an unfamiliar reality marked by uncertainty, anxiety, and sleepless nights.

Yet, as so often happens, it is precisely from that upheaval that Massimo finds the strength to move forward. And it is during those uncertain days that his unexpected and overwhelming encounter with Beatrice begins to challenge every certainty on which his life had rested.

The Dissonance of the Pendulum explores the delicate boundary between loyalty and passion, freedom and morality, through an intense and conflicted love story unfolding over little more than a decade against the backdrop of the most severe economic crisis since the Second World War.

Synopsis

The novel tells the story of Massimo, a Sicilian entrepreneur who, after building his career in Milan in the telecommunications industry, decides to return to his hometown in response to his wife Gabriella’s wish.

Convinced that the hardest part of his journey is finally behind him and believing he has finally found a lasting direction for his life, Massimo embarks on a relentless commute between Catania and Milan. Over time, this constant movement begins to unsettle his routines, his relationships, and the certainties on which he had built his future.

Meanwhile, the industry in which he has invested his enthusiasm, sacrifices, and hopes begins to crumble. The collapse of Lehman Brothers, the economic crisis that sweeps across Italy, the downfall of Italtel—once the country’s leading telecommunications company—and the gradual decline of the telecommunications industry mark the beginning of a profound personal and existential crisis.

Amid growing anxiety, financial hardship, and sleepless nights, Massimo struggles to withstand the collapse of the certainties on which he had built his life. It is during those uncertain days that his unexpected and overwhelming encounter with Beatrice begins to challenge every balance he had carefully built, giving rise to a relationship as intense as it is difficult to navigate.

Caught between the life he has built with Gabriella and his growing feelings for Beatrice, Massimo finds himself navigating fragile and uncertain ground, where loyalty and desire, responsibility and freedom, constantly overlap and blur into one another.

Set against the backdrop of one of the most severe economic crises since the Second World War, the novel follows its protagonist on a journey of personal, emotional, and inner transformation that ultimately leads him to the distant landscapes of Africa,

where, among vast open spaces, silence, and a simpler way of life, he attempts to rediscover himself, come to terms with his inner conflicts, and find a new meaning for his life.
